I remember I had a college professor bragging about his web site with a .ws domain name. He told us that the ws stood for web site.

One day, I decided to look up the meanings of all of the tld names and find out what country each was associated with, eg., .ca is Canada, .it is Italy, de is Germany...

I found out that ws stands for Western Samoa, which probably answers the question. How many people would want a web site with a Western Samoan tld name? :-)
